What Is the Best Stone for a Patio in Fairfield County CT?

By Wilmer Valladares·Materials·4 min read

There Is No Single Best Stone — But There Is a Right Stone for Your Property

The best patio stone for a Westport property with a formal garden is different from the best stone for a Wilton property with a naturalistic wooded landscape. Material selection is about matching the stone to the property, the architecture, and the climate performance required.

Here's how the most commonly specified patio stones in Fairfield County compare.

Pennsylvania Bluestone

The most widely used premium patio material in Fairfield County and across Connecticut. Dense, frost-resistant, and available in both cut dimensional formats and irregular natural cleft pieces.

Best for: Properties where a clean, formal appearance is the goal. Colonial, Craftsman, and contemporary homes throughout Fairfield County.

Climate performance: Excellent. Properly installed bluestone handles Connecticut's freeze-thaw cycles reliably when set on adequate base depth with proper drainage.

Average installed cost in Fairfield County: $20–35 per square foot.

Goshen Stone

A metamorphic schist quarried in Western Massachusetts — one of the most locally sourced premium patio options available in Connecticut. Warm gray tones, naturally flat cleavage, and a character that reads as genuinely New England.

Best for: Properties with naturalistic landscapes, wooded settings, or where the goal is a patio that looks like it has always been part of the land. Common on Wilton and Ridgefield properties.

Climate performance: Excellent. Goshen stone has been used in New England landscapes for generations — it handles the climate well.

Average installed cost in Fairfield County: $18–28 per square foot.

Connecticut Fieldstone

Locally sourced irregular stone with highly variable color and character. The most naturalistic option and often the most cost-effective when sourced from regional suppliers.

Best for: Informal patios, rural properties, and projects where the organic character of locally sourced stone is the primary aesthetic goal.

Climate performance: Good when properly installed. Variable stone thickness requires careful base preparation to maintain a level surface over time.

Average installed cost in Fairfield County: $15–25 per square foot depending on sourcing and fitting complexity.

Granite

Harder and denser than bluestone or fieldstone — granite is virtually impervious to weather and extremely low maintenance. Available in a wide range of colors from gray to pink to black.

Best for: Contemporary properties, pool surrounds, and high-traffic areas where maximum durability is the priority. Also commonly used for steps and edging alongside other stone types.

Climate performance: Outstanding. Granite is the most weather-resistant natural stone option available for Connecticut patios.

Average installed cost in Fairfield County: $25–45 per square foot depending on color and format.

Porcelain Pavers

Not a natural stone — but worth including because porcelain pavers have become a serious option for Fairfield County properties, particularly in contemporary applications. Frost-resistant, virtually maintenance-free, and available in large format tiles that mimic natural stone with high precision.

Best for: Contemporary homes, pool surrounds, and projects where the client wants the look of natural stone with minimal maintenance commitment.

Climate performance: Excellent when installed correctly with appropriate substrate and jointing for freeze-thaw conditions.

Average installed cost in Fairfield County: $25–40 per square foot.
