About Legacy Mason

Greenwich properties are held to a different standard. So is our work.

From backcountry estates off Round Hill Road to the brick and Tudor facades along Greenwich Avenue, this town has masonry worth protecting. Much of it is a century old, built with lime mortar and full-thickness stone, and it needs a mason who knows the difference between matching original work and covering it up.

The work divides by neighborhood. In the Backcountry it is long driveway aprons, engineered retaining walls and stone terraces on steep, ledge-heavy lots. In Old Greenwich, Riverside and Belle Haven it is coastal exposure — salt air, wind-driven rain and settlement on sandy soil attacking mortar joints, chimneys and seawall caps. In Cos Cob and Glenville it is older brick and block that needs honest repointing rather than a cosmetic skim.

Wilmer Valladares learned stonework from his father and founded Legacy Mason Contractors on one rule: the material and the method have to match the house. In Greenwich that means correct mortar specifications on older masonry, proper footings below frost line, drainage designed for steep and rocky lots, and details that read intentional from the street. We work directly for homeowners and as the masonry subcontractor for general contractors, architects and estate managers running Greenwich projects.

Services in Greenwich

What we build in Greenwich.

Custom natural stone and paver patio at an upscale Connecticut shingle-style home

Stone & Paver Patios

Bluestone, granite, and natural stone terraces laid to sit level for decades — designed around the architecture of the home rather than a catalog page. We detail the edges, the transitions, and the drainage before the first stone is set.

Retaining Walls

Greenwich backcountry lots are steep, rocky, and unforgiving of shortcuts. We engineer walls with proper base, drainage, and geogrid where needed, then face them in stone that belongs to the property.

Brick Pointing & Tuckpointing

Much of Greenwich's older brick predates Portland cement. We remove failing mortar to depth and repoint with a specification matched to the original — lime-based on pre-1950 masonry — so the brick, not the mortar, keeps its strength.

Chimney Repair & Repointing

Crowns, flashing, liners, and mortar joints on Greenwich chimneys take the full force of coastal weather. We diagnose honestly, rebuild what needs rebuilding, and waterproof the rest.

Stone Veneers

Natural and manufactured stone veneer on facades, chimneys, columns, and feature walls — substrate assessed first, then installed to shed water properly for the life of the wall.

Local Knowledge

The standard here is different. So is our approach.

Coastal Greenwich is a harsher environment than the numbers suggest. Salt air off the Sound accelerates mortar erosion and rusts embedded steel, and freeze-thaw cycling finishes what the salt starts. That is why we specify mortar by the age and porosity of the existing masonry instead of defaulting to a bagged mix, and why exterior work gets scheduled around the freeze window rather than pushed into it — masonry set too late in the season fails at the joint first.

Older Greenwich masonry was laid with soft lime mortar. Repointing it with modern Portland cement traps moisture inside the wall and spalls the face off the brick, which is why so much "repaired" masonry in town looks worse five years later. We match mortar type, color, joint profile and stone selection to the original work.

Capacity is the other half of the answer. Our core crew is eight masons, scaling to roughly twenty on larger scopes, and Wilmer is on site for every job as foreman. That is deliberate: it is enough crew to hold a general contractor's schedule on a Greenwich build, and small enough that the person who walked your property is the one running the work.
