Masonry Columns & Pillars in Connecticut

Custom masonry columns and pillars for driveway entrances, porches, and freestanding architectural features — built with the cap detail that protects them for the long term.

About this service

Columns done right command attention before anyone steps inside.

Masonry columns and pillars are among the most architecturally impactful elements on a residential property. Entry gate pillars set the character of the approach. Porch columns define the facade. Freestanding columns anchor a landscape composition.

When they're built with care and the right materials, they add lasting presence and value. Legacy Mason builds and restores masonry columns throughout Fairfield County — new construction and repair work on existing structures of every style and scale.

What's included

Column & pillar services.

Entry Gate Pillars

Custom-built masonry pillars for driveway and property entrances. Brick, natural stone, and concrete block constructed to the scale of the property and finished with caps in bluestone, granite, or matching masonry materials.

Porch Columns

Masonry porch columns in brick and stone — structural and decorative, built to complement the home's architectural character. We assess existing porch structures and design columns appropriate to the load and aesthetic.

Freestanding Decorative Columns

Freestanding garden columns, landscape markers, and feature pillars in natural stone and brick. Built to serve as visual anchors in designed outdoor spaces.

Column Repair & Restoration

Leaning, cracking, or deteriorating masonry columns — assessed for structural condition and repaired or rebuilt as required. We source matching materials for visible repair work on established columns.

Column Caps & Finials

Bluestone, granite, and precast column caps installed on new and existing masonry columns. Properly overhung and sloped caps are essential for directing water away from the column core.

For column and pillar construction in Fairfield County we source fieldstone and granite locally through Connecticut and Southern New England suppliers where possible. Bluestone column caps — the most critical single component in a column's long-term performance — are sourced from Connecticut regional suppliers and cut to project-specific dimensions. A properly overhung bluestone cap is what keeps water out of the column core and makes the rest of the work worth doing.

Built for Connecticut

What makes a masonry column last in Connecticut.

Column failures in Connecticut are almost always moisture-driven. Water infiltrates the top of the column, freezes, expands, and progressively spalls brick and mortar from the inside out. A well-fitted, properly overhung column cap is the most important detail in a column's long-term performance.

Legacy Mason installs column caps on every new column build and replaces failed caps on repair projects — because keeping water out of the column core is what makes the rest of the work worth doing.

The Legacy Mason process

Our column and pillar process.

Every column project starts with a footing assessment — new pillars require a proper concrete footing below frost line, and column failures often trace back to inadequate footings. We dig, pour, and reinforce as required for the design.

You receive an itemized estimate covering footing, masonry construction, cap installation, and any integrated lighting or gate hardware coordination.

All new column construction is covered by a 2–5 year warranty.

Featured project

Darien, CT

Natural Stone Pillar Entryway

A Darien property needed a driveway entry pillar that could anchor the property line and frame the arrival experience appropriately for a well-maintained Fairfield County estate property. The brief was simple — build something that looks like it belongs there and will still look right in 30 years.

Wilmer built the pillar from blended fieldstone — warm gray and amber tones selected for visual cohesion — with a thick bluestone cap and a bronze lantern mounted at the top. The pillar is anchored on a Belgian block curb that frames the driveway apron and ties the entry composition together at grade.

The finished pillar reads as original to the property — which is the right standard for entry work on an established Darien home. The kind of detail that makes a property look considered rather than assembled.
