The water table is high, the soil holds moisture, and salt air off the Sound pulls lime out of mortar joints and corrodes embedded steel. Wall design here starts with drainage: free-draining backfill, functioning weeps and a base that can shed water, because a wall that holds water in Darien fails at the first hard freeze.
